Korean supplier Samsung SDI opens EV battery plant in Xi'an

Samsung SDI, the battery-making subsidiary of Korean conglomerate Samsung, opened its first plant in China last week to produce batteries for electric vehicles.

The factory, in the northwest China city of Xi'an, can build batteries for as many as 40,000 electric vehicles a year, the company said.

The company will supply 10 automakers and commercial truck producers. According to Samsung, two key customers are bus manufacturer Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co. and truckmaker Beiqi Foton Motor Co.

Samsung SDI expects its investment in the plant to total $600 million (3.81 billion yuan) by 2020. The company said the factory will generate $1 billion in total sales by then.

Meanwhile, Korean chemical giant LG Chem is building an EV battery plant in the east China city of Nanjing. That plant, which will start production in 2016, is expected to produce as many as 100,000 battery packs a year.
