China ranked first in nuclear power capacity under construction
After decades of development, China has been one of the top countries in nuclear power development, said Li Guanxing, president of China Nuclear Society (CNS), at the 2015 annual meeting of the CNS on Sept. 22. China is becoming the global nuclear power industry center, People's Daily Overseas Edition reported.
Currently, a total of 52 nuclear power units are in operation, under construction or awaiting construction in China. China ranks first in nuclear power capacity under construction and ranks fourth in nuclear capacity globally.
According to Li Guanxing, currently, East Asia, especially China, is experiencing a vigorous development in nuclear development. In order to become a powerful country in nuclear power, China should strengthen fundamental research and adopt innovation-driven strategy.
A written proposal on actively pushing forward China's nuclear power construction was issued at the meeting. The proposal said that China has become the world biggest energy producing country and consuming country. Nuclear power, which is efficient, clean and safe, will be a key way to safeguard energy security and cope with climate change. China, therefore, must actively adhere to its nuclear power construction policies and fulfill the goal that China's nuclear power capacity reaches or exceeds 11 percent of the world total as soon as possible.
