Johnson Controls plans 1.3 billion yuan battery plant in northeast China
U.S. supplier Johnson Controls Inc. will build an automotive battery plant in the northeast China city of Shenyang to supply the local auto industry.
Construction of the $200 million (1.3 billion yuan) factory will begin in early 2016. The plant is due to start output in 2018, Johnson Controls said.
The factory will have capacity to build 6 million automotive batteries a year after reaching full output. It will mainly produce batteries used in stop start systems that automakers are increasingly adopting to enhance light-vehicle fuel economy.
Shenyang is home to state-owned Chinese automaker Brilliance China Automotive Holdings and its joint venture with BMW AG.
Johnson Controls started to supply automotive batteries in China in 2005. It has established manufacturing sites in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing and the east China city of Changxing. It also operates an r&d center for automotive batteries in Shanghai.
