Passenger vehicle exports plunge 20% in June

Exports of passenger vehicles built in China slumped 20 percent year on year to 37,800 vehicles in June, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported.

Exports were hurt by weak demand in major overseas markets such as Russia and Brazil.

At Great Wall Motor Co., exports slumped 60 percent to 2,232 vehicles, while Geely Automobile Holdings' shipments plunged 67 percent to 1,901.

Last month, SAIC-GM Motors Corp., General Motors' passenger vehicle partnership, launched the first exports of Chevrolet's Sail 3 with the shipment of 756 vehicles to Chile and Peru (see a related story in this newsletter).

Other automakers that produce in China have not disclosed export figures for June.

Through June, China's passenger vehicle exports dropped 19 percent to roughly 213,700 vehicles, according to CAAM.
