Light-vehicle sales fall 3% in June despite strong SUV demand
Sales of light vehicles in China fell 3 percent year on year to 1.51 million in June as weak demand for sedans and microvans outweighed strong SUV deliveries.
It was the first monthly sales decline since December 2008, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
Among light vehicles, only SUVs maintained sales growth, surging 38 percent from a year earlier to 448,200 vehicles.
Deliveries of multipurpose vehicles slid 1 percent to 126,000. Sedan deliveries dropped 15 percent to 846,200 vehicles and microvan sales slumped 22 percent to 91,000 vehicles.
Light-vehicle sales in China through June rose 5 percent from a year earlier to 10.10 million vehicles, reflecting strong first-quarter demand.
In the first six months, sales of all vehicles -- including buses and commercial trucks -- edged up 1 percent year on year to 11.85 million units.
