Wanxiang to build Fisker Karma in Southern California
Fisker Automotive and Technology Group, owned by China's Wanxiang Group Corp., plans to revive production of the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sports car in a plant to be built in Southern California.
The city of Moreno Valley, in a June 19 statement, confirmed that Fisker planned to build a 555,670-square-foot (51,623-square-meter) factory in the municipality, which is east of Los Angeles. Fisker did not indicate when production would begin.
Wanxiang purchased the assets of the bankrupt Fisker Automotive Holdings Inc. for $149.2 million in 2014. In February, Reuters reported that Wanxiang planned to relaunch the Fisker Karma in mid-2016.
Reuters, citing sources, said the company would rename the vehicle the Elux Karma. Wanxiang did not comment on the report.
Wanxiang, which makes chassis components, is headquartered in the eastern China city of Hangzhou. Its American unit is based in Elgin, Ill., and operates plants in 13 states.
