Great Wall, Geely post double-digit gains
Great Wall Motor Co. and Geely Automobile Holdings outperformed stagnant industrywide sales in China with big gains in May deliveries.
Great Wall, China's largest SUV producer, said deliveries last month jumped 31 percent year on year to 70,355 vehicles. Geely also had a strong month, with sales up 25 percent year on year to 38,395.
Great Wall, a privately held company in the north China city of Baoding, has poured resources into its Haval SUV lineup while scaling back development of sedans and pickups.
The strategy has worked. In May, the company sold 57,998 SUVs, an increase of 56 percent from a year earlier.
By contrast, Great Wall's sedan and pickup sales continued to decline. Sedan deliveries plunged 55 percent year on year to 2,724 vehicles, while pickup sales dropped 13 percent to 9,633.
For the first five months, Great Wall's vehicle sales totaled 298,104 vehicles, up 25 percent from a year earlier.
Geely is reaping rewards from its decision a couple of years ago to dump light-selling models and improve its product lineup.
Geely has received a boost from two improved models, the Xindihao and New Vision compact sedans. Sales of the Xindihao and its previous version -- the EC7 -- jumped 47 percent in May to 13,929.
Deliveries of the New Vision totaled 8,304 last month, more than 6 times its sales a year earlier.
In the first five months, Geely's vehicle sales surged 40 percent year on year to 219,038 vehicles, as demand for the Xindihao and New Vision remained strong.
Geely is based in the east China city of Hangzhou. Its parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co, also owns Volvo Car Corp.
