Chery enters China's fast-growing MPV market

Chery Automobile Co. launched sales of its first multipurpose vehicle last week at the Shanghai auto show, part of the automaker's effort to gain a foothold in China's fast-growing MPV market.

The seven-seat MPV, dubbed the Arrizo M7, is priced between 79,900 yuan ($12,890) and 107,900 yuan. It targets family users, the company said.

The vehicle is 4,730 mm (186.2 inches) long, 1,823 mm wide and 1,590 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.

It offers two powertrain combinations: a 1.8-liter engine combined with a five-speed manual transmission, or a 2.0-liter engine with a continuously variable transmission.

Thanks to rising household incomes, Chinese car buyers are migrating from microvans and sedans to MPVs and SUVs.

In the first quarter, China's MPV sales surged 19 percent from a year earlier to 582,800 vehicles.

Chery, headquartered in Wuhu in east China's Anhui province, sold 127,132 sedans and MPVs in the first three months of the year, up 17 percent year on year.

The state-owned carmaker also runs two joint ventures with foreign companies. Qoros Automotive Co. is a joint venture with Kenon Holdings of Singapore, and Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Co. is a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover.
