Changan Ford buys Hafei assembly plant in northeast China
Changan Ford Automobile Co. is acquiring an assembly plant owned by Hafei Automotive Industry Group Co. in the northeast China city of Harbin to expand vehicle production.
"Changan Ford will utilize the acquired assets and upgrade them to meet the increasing demand of the Chinese [car] market," the company said in a statement last week.
The automaker released no additional details about its plans for the plant.
But according to a report filed in January by the Harbin city government assessing the environmental impact of Changan Ford's plan to renovate Hafei's old car plant, the improved plant is to begin trial production in June 2016. It will be able to build 200,000 cars a year after reaching full capacity.
Changan Ford will produce passenger vehicles with engine displacements ranging from 1.0 liter to 1.5 liters, according to the report.
Changan Ford, a 50-50 joint venture between Changan Automobile Co. and Ford Motor Co., operates three plants in the southwest China municipality of Chongqing. A fourth plant is due to launch production this year in the east China city of Hangzhou.
In the first two months of this year, Changan Ford delivered 144,069 vehicles in China, an increase of 17 percent year on year.
Hafei is primarily a microvan producer, but it builds a few sedans for its own brand. The company has been mired in red ink for years.
In 2009, Hafei was acquired by China Changan Automobile Group Co., the parent company of Changan Automobile Co.
