Mercedes, Audi deliveries rise 15%, giving early lift to luxury market
STUTTGART -- Mercedes-Benz and Audi AG reported sales increases of 15 percent in China last month, giving the luxury market a solid start to the year.
Audi, China's best-selling luxury brand, said deliveries rose 15 percent year on year to 51,248 vehicles.
Volkswagen's luxury brand maintained the pace it set in 2014, when it boosted sales nearly 18 percent to 578,932 vehicles. China is Audi's largest market by a wide margin.
Mercedes reported a sales increase of nearly 15 percent year on year to 28,080 vehicles in January as the German automaker benefited from its expanded lineup of locally produced models.
Last September, Beijing Benz Automotive Co. launched sales of its locally produced long-wheelbase C-class compact sedan for the Chinese market. China is Mercedes' second-largest market for the C class.
Mercedes sales have been rising steadily since the company shook up its China management, unified its distribution system, opened new dealerships and expanded its product lineup.
Last year, Mercedes' China sales jumped 29 percent to 281,588 vehicles, cementing the company's status as China's No. 3 luxury brand. BMW has not yet announced its January sales in China.
