Renault poised to approach 2017 sales goal with SUVs, crossovers
Renault SA, a late entrant in China among global automakers, delivered 50,109 vehicles in the first eight months, more than four times its sales for the same period a year ago.
The French automaker’s China sales through August have put it on track to come close to its 2017 sales target of 80,000 vehicles.
Two locally produced models generated all of Renault’s sales. Through August, Renault has sold 32,767 Koleos crossovers and 17,342 Kadjar SUVs.
Sales for the year to date were announced by Dongfeng Renault, Renault’s joint venture with China’s Dongfeng Motor Corp. The partnership did not disclose August sales.
Until recently, Renault left China to its corporate partner, Nissan Motor Co., which has a major presence here.
Renault launched local production in 2015 after forming a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corp. The Kadjar went on sale in China last year, while the Koleos hit the market in April.
Renault will supplement those two models with two imports. The Captur subcompact crossover will arrive in China in October, and the Espace SUV will go on sale late this year.
To support its sales growth, Donfeng Renault also will increase its dealership network to 200 stores, up from 177 outlets as of last week.
Dongfeng Renault, a 50-50 partnership between Dongfeng and Renault, is headquartered in the central China city of Wuhan.
